Are there any kind of promotions from Blizzard going on, like an opportunity to reactivate an old account for a trial period? I'd be interested if such were the case.

There are a few different options.
Burning Crusade Trial (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/trial/splash.html)
This will apparently let you try out the first expansion for free for 10 days, which I believe will work with your old account (I believe you'd played shortly with the original verson?). It doesn't look like the account needs to be active so this might be what you want.
WoW Free Trial (https://signup.worldofwarcraft.com/trial/index.html)
This is for a 10 Day Free Trial for a new WoW account.
Scroll of Resurrection
Current players get a month of free time if a returning player uses this referral when they return to the game.
Recruit-a-Friend
A new player and referring friend get a number of benefits for doing this, such as bonus experience gained while grouped, the ability to automatically summon your friend to you (I believe it's original player summons new, not sure if it works both ways), and a special mount.
Hope that helps you some. Offhand I didn't find the links for the last two, and it seems to me there's probably a free trial related to Wrath of the Lich King (second expansion) as well.

From what I know, the perks for most promotions Blizzard has regarding WoW have benefits for the person that gets another person into the game, and not to the person joining the game.
Demeth has covered all of the options that I know of. From my experience with Recruit-a-Friend, the bonus experience while grouped together is substantial (2x normal experience, this does not include rested experience). Also the ability to summon the linked account (note, not character, account) does indeed work both ways, but only up to lvl 60 at which point you can't use it anymore. I say account because myself on character A could summon friend's character B, then I could hop on character C and summon B again. The summon has a 1 hour cooldown btw.
If you do want to go the Recruit-A-Friend route, you WILL have to create a new WoW account with the special code your friend will provide to you. That's the only downside, in case you have an existing account with items you don't want to lose.

I used the Burning Crusade trial thing last year after my account was inactive for a long time. Biggest downside is that new characters can't be tagged on the trial account. So if you were to go that route with a new toon, you'd be guildless for trial period.

(That's what we told you, anyway). :browsmiley:

Thanks - I'm going to give one of these a try.
