E tuning

So I pick up a slide today ...thinking sure this could be cool. One of the locals tells me to go with glass as most people like it the best and to just pick the size by the way I like it to feel on my finger. I mess around a bit with the slide in the store to realize nothing I am doing sounds like much, not too surprising as I have not tried it before. The owner comes out and tells me to tune the Guitar to E. I am thinking top and bottom are tuned to E....but then the thought hit me...does he mean each string. So thats my question do I tune each string to E to "Tune to E"?

i think it's E flat - 1/2 step down on each string

I did some research and found out that what he told me we tune to "open E". After looking it up was a simple as getting out the tuner and adjusting 3 strings. Made a huge difference in playing with a slide. I also found out that 2 of my strings were set a bit low for the slide and had to adjust them up a bit.
