So I'm about a year in and going strong. Now I've got some cash from Xmas, Birthday, etc... Burning a hole in my Pocket. I'm looking to upgrade something , but not sure which route to go...
Right now I've got the following:
Ibanez V-blade (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-VBlade-VBT700-Electric-Guitar?sku=512556)
Ibanez TBX150R Amp (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-TBX150R-Tone-Blaster-Xtreme-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=480945&src=3WWRWXGB&ZYXSEM=0)
Digitech RP500 multi-effects pedal (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/DigiTech-RP500-Guitar-Multi-Effects-Pedal?sku=155502)
So what I'm going back and forth on right now is whether I should get another guitar or upgrade my amp. I'd like a second guitar for different tunings and whatnot. maybe with a floyd rose even. I've been looking at several... everything from dean and esp to gibson.
I'd also like to upgrade to a good tube driven stack. I've been looking at a couple of the marshal heads (JVM410h and the Kerry King Signature) and the mesa heads... triple rectifier in particular. Could also go with an engl, krank, etc... But primarily the first three. Looking to do a good Metal Half stack to start and then eventually a full... My neighbors just aren't pissed off enough at me yet... ;)
So based on my current gear, where would be the next best step?

I love my Marshall jvm410H (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Marshall-JVM410-H-Tube-Amp-Head?sku=480774). Its sounds great.
You'll need a cab to go with it though. I have a Marshall 4x12 with vintage 30 (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Marshall-1960V-280W-4x12-Guitar-Extension-Cabinet?sku=605014) to put it through. Its tough!.
I have a number of guitars now a days.
USA Jackson Soloist (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Jackson-SL2H-Custom-USA-Guitar?sku=511489)
Fender American Deluxe Strat (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-American-Deluxe-Stratocaster?sku=511142)
Gibson (actual) 1970's Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty" (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Custom-Shop-Les-Paul-Custom-Electric-Guitar?sku=517110).
I have a couple of mid range Ibenez guitars too.
Boss GT-10 Multi-effect pedal (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-GT10-Guitar-MultiEffects-Pedal?sku=151133)
I spend most my time with headphones through the Boss pedal cuz I cannot play loud at home, and swap between the Jackson and Fender kinda to get comfortable with different guitars but primarily cuz it helps keep my creativity up as well as the fun factor of practicing.
That Paul's a beast, its gotta weight > 15 pounds, but it sounds great. But they all sound great and all different. I sought to get as much variety as possible between my guitars.
Jackson with more modern Humbucker and Floyd Rose, neck through.
Fender with Single Coils and more traditional wammy, bolt on neck.
Gibson with vintage humbuckers, no wammy, one piece neck.
When I play out the Paul gets the attention.
I am thinking of getting a V next (one day).

This is the best processor for the money and what I use.
http://www.guitarcenter.com/DigiTech-GSP1101-Guitar-Multi-Effects-Processor-104619663-i1173072.gc
This is a great les paul with good electronics and BurstBuckers. My main Axe. You can find it on sale from time to time for $799.00. Lightweight too. Not hard on the back.

I use two of these stacks. They produce true Marshal tone whithout the police knocking on the door. I play thru these live on 10 with no issues as well.

My other les paul is a desert burst standard which is weight relived as well. Only a few colors of this one left.

This guitar has been replaced with the new 2008 standard which has a new neck and comes with grover tuners and dunlop straplocks. FYI. I just love the 50's neck over the 60's. It's wider. Pics below.

I've been playing bass guitar solid for 16 years now. In my honest opinion, it isn't the guitar or the equipment that makes the music, it's the musician.
Don't worry too much about what type/kind of guitar to get, it's all about the end result to the listener and I've seen some amazing playing on some of the crappiest instruments! Matter of fact, my main 5string right now is a cheap $25 Cort I got at a garage sale.. and most of the time I can make it sound better than most bass players using a good Precision.
Just my $.02

This was definitely a setup I was looking at, but I just keep asking myself If it's more than I need at this point in my playing progress. Especially at the price point. I was looking at the Mesa Triple Rectifier, but thinking kind of the same thing there.
Then I came across the Line 6 Spider Valve. I know Line 6 has a good reputation when it comes to solid states and modeling amps... Guess I wasn't aware they had a tube model. It seems to get a lot of good reviews and falls more in my price range. Thing holding me back here is that it has a lot of effects built into it. Would that more or less make my rp500 useless?

Heh, that's actually one of the Gibsons I was looking at, along with the SG Special Faded and the Commemorative 50th Anniversery Flying V Brimstone. Was also looking at various ESP's Deans with EMG's on em. Viva La MEtal. :ylsuper:

I hear ya and believe me... I don't expect miracles at my Level. ;) I'm also more than happy with my V. It plays and sounds great and looks badass. I would like a second guitar for various tunings/backup. Ya know, one for standard one for drop D... I know I could change tunings at will on my current axe, but I'm lazy. :D It would could to have a backup should I ever get in with a band and start gigging on the weekends.

I was able to get pretty good deals on this equip mainly cuz my brother works in a music store and and number of bands and he picked the cab and paul (and the ibenez's) at trade in value and passed. I picked that off him at good price (at least 50% of costs).
The Fender my latest buy (online) was either a b-stock or clearance item cuz i was able to get it new for a few hundred dollars off any price for it i can find. Beside having the pickguard plastic protection film nearly embedded into the pickguard (took about 5 hours to clean that up) its as good as new.
The head I bought from local music store which for some reason was also a few hundred dollars less than anywhere I'd seen including online. I couldn't pass that up since I had been eying it. Went home with that Jackson and that head on the same day (good tax return last year!!!).
My only point is there are deals to be had, and if you can find a means (ebay or other wise (gotten some good deals on recording preamps that way)), you may not have to let the sticker shock of new off the shelf items deter you from getting what you really want.
With the economy in the dumps, 2nd hand maybe a option not to miss.

Ok, so I started to do some bidding on ebay.
Had a bid in for a 410h store display model at $1500. Screwed this up cause I haven't ebayed in awhile. It had a buy it now at 1499 and starting bid at 1479, so stupid me, I enter in a max bid of 1499 thinking it will just default to auto buy it now should the bid get bumped to 1499 by someone else. Didn't realize that meant the buy it now option went away. So naturally I go to work and when I get home I see that within 10 minutes of the end of the auction someone beat me out by $5. In hind sight I can't believe I was trying to be cheap by saving $20 on an amp that retails at $3000. So stupid. Before I learned my lesson I did the same thing on a speaker cab. 1960A with road case with a buy it now option at $500. Stupid me bid it up to see where the reserve was at instead of just selecting buy now. Reserve was at $450 so that was pretty dumb too. Best case scenario I save $50. I'll find out tomorrow if I scored on that or not. So kicking myself right now. Could have had one hell of a half stack for less than half the retail price. Doh!
In the mean time I found an open no reserve auction on another used 410H. Auction claimed it was only , at most twice and the pictures of it look perfect. Right now the bid is up to $820 and I saw another used one in a similar auction go for just under $1200 yesterday. so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that one doesn't go fast my spending limit. I'll find out monday I guess.
If it doesn't work out I'm going to keep looking or I might try for a JCM2000 TSL 100. This appears to be another great head and they can be had for less than the 410H. The more I think about it the more I think the 410H would be overkill for me (not that TSL wouldn't be either). ;) So if things don't work out on the JVM, maybe I'd be better off with TSL. Thoughts?

If I was going for a 4/12 stack I would go with one of thees heads, they are the best heads ever made by marshall IMHO.
100w heads are just too loud for me on stage but this one is the 100w to get. Also get some ear plugs. I keep one in at all times and move it back and forth so I have one good ear going at all times. Remember, you don't get that good Marshall crunch until past 7. Might as well be on 10.

Here is my top choice, the 50w head. I had one of these and could kill myself for selling it.

Well I ended up getting the JVM I was bidding on for $1300 + shipping. Not bad considering it's condition. Only been used 2 or three times. No marks no probs... supposedly. Talked to the seller on the phone and it should be a sweet deal. I figure if anything goes wrong with it, I can send it off for some Voodoo mods and still be below Retail on what I could have bought a new one for.
I ended up getting the 1960a cab for $500... Not bad considering it comes with a road case. No visible marks or dings in the photos that I can see. As long as the speakers aren't blown to hell or anything I should be good to go. eventually I'm going to find a 1960b and make a fullstack out of it, but for now this should be more than enough.

Thanks for the advice Buzz. I was looking at the JCM800 2203KK (Kerry King Signature). It was probably going to be a choice between this and the TSL 100 If the JVM hadn't worked out.
Like I mentioned, my neighbors are going to hate me, but I really don't care... :diablotin:
The solid state Ibanez I have now gets police friendly around half gain and 1/3-1/2 volume, So I might be moving practice time to the basement or looking for a house in the country come spring... :D
Now I just need to keep improving on the guitar. I'm hoping to find a band to start playing with this summer. Maybe doing a gig every other weekend or something. That's where this JVM half stack ought to shine (bright enough to melt some faces.) :D
After I get it up and running I'll post some video of the loudness and/or the accompanying mugshot. ;)

I was going to post a link to an amp like I use, but the only ones I found are is ass condition so I'll take a picture later and post it.
It's a nice late 80's fender champ with the faux snake skin cover. Can you say hair band? It's got a nice low volume distortion or a clean sound that you can really get into. Seems the stock speaker gets a little shakey with a high volume low notes, but I loves it.
I also have a 60's fender champ and a Pig Nose.
and some thing that I bought on the side of the road I'm fairly certain was stolen. But it was 25 bucks.

I have my old Peavy Backstage that dad bought me around 1980. Still does everything I need. Eventually I would like to get something better.
Am I better off to go with a head unit so that I can build a stack as I want? Rather than one like I have? The price on the mini stack looked reasonable for the one that Dr. Buzz uses.

Ok, So my JVM showed up yesterday exactly as advertised. Not a mark on it or the footpedal. I haven't powered it on to test yet since I haven't gotten the speakers yet.
So I paid for the speakers on the 7th (a Saturday) so they should have shipped on the 9th. As of yesterday I had not even heard a peep from the guy I bought from, so I send an email asking for a tracking number, etc.. Also indicating that I'm going to be gone for a few days this week and need to make arrangements if it's not going to show up before I leave. A day and a half later and here's what I get back...
After i received your payment, the following monday i proceeded to call ups and fedex so i could ship your package they first said they could not pick it up if i was shipping to aberdeen south dakota and i had to go to a shipping store, so today i finally went after trying to get your marshall and roadcase shipped asap by ups or fedex picking it up. so when i got to the store i finally found out why these two companies wouldnt pick it up.
you live in a zone 7 which basicly means not many people ship there, so there is very few trucks that deliver big packages like the one you purchased, when i put the marshall 1960 with the roadcase i put a STANDARD SHIPPING Price which basicly mean that an average of what it cost to ship, but in your case this doesnt apply, this is the first this happens to me i never heard of a zone 7 area,
since not many trucks go there they are charging me a total of 240 dollars for shipping and i sold the marshall and roadcase to you for 470 dollars so it doesnt make sense at all.
they are charging 100 dollar fee to go to aberdeen south dakota and deliver it.
they are charging 50 dollars for fuel and other expenses
and the other 90 dollars are for the shipping and handling.
since you gave me 60 dollars i wouldnt mind paying the other 30 dollars on me but the 150 extra dollars is just impossible for me to pay i dont have thet kind of money.
so if you want your package to be delivered you can send 150 dollars through paypal to :*******
which is the same email i am writing from. i will be more than glan to put the remaining 30 dollars to make this work for the both of us.
i also encourage you to call ups or fedex and get a qoute from my zipcode "33029" to your zip code "57401"
for a 130 pound and W=35 1/2" D=18 1/2" H=36 1/4 package
and offcourse if you dont want to do any of this i can give you your money back.
thank you
please reply asap!Ok, I can see that it might cost more than $60 to ship, but his listing never said it was an estimated cost. I seem to think I'm being had here... If all this was an issue, why wasn't he contacting me early last week? Am I getting the old bait and switch or what?
What do the UPS/Fedex Guru's here think?
I'm thinking of reporting this to ebay because it seems pretty BS, but I'm thinking I'd rather have my money back now and it might be better to wait till I have it in hand, before pissing this guy off.
Thoughts?

Ok, So I plugged the info into the UPS website and I came up with this:
Days In Transit: 1 Billable Weight:
131.0 UPS Next Day Air Saver® By End of Day,
Friday
February 20, 2009 620.45 USD*
Days In Transit: 1 Billable Weight:
131.0 UPS 2nd Day Air® By End of Day,
Saturday
February 21, 2009 524.80 USD*
Days In Transit: Saturday Billable Weight:
131.0 UPS 2nd Day Air® By End of Day,
Monday
February 23, 2009 509.65 USD*
Days In Transit: 2 Billable Weight:
131.0 UPS 3 Day Select® By End of Day,
Tuesday
February 24, 2009 337.70 USD*
Days In Transit: 3 Billable Weight:
131.0 UPS Ground By End of Day,
Wednesday
February 25, 2009 163.54 USD*
$163 and I bet I could knock it down a little bit more If I arranged to pick it up myself. So where the hell this guy came up with $240 and all the BS about zone 7, I have no idea. Think I'll send the guy a copy of this, offer to split the difference or refund my money, and then maybe report him for trying to scam me.

Ok, so here is what I sent (edited for space) ;)
I understand that it might cost more than $60 too ship, but I would also like to point out that at no point anywhere in the listing was it mentioned that the shipping price was an estimate. Also, if this was the issue, why not let me know this back on the 9th or 10th instead of waiting for me to email you on the 16th? As for zone 7 and what not, I'm really not sure what that's all about. I've had lot's of stuff shipped to me (some of it as big as these speakers) from as far away and never had a problem with it. I went on to the UPS website and ran the figures you listed in your previous email and It came up with the following numbers:
edited for space (includes cut and paste of shipping quotes)
As you can see it gave me a number of $163 for ground shipping and I could probably get cheaper if I knocked down the insured amount and arranged to pick it up myself at a designated location.
Here is what I am willing to do. I have already paid $60 for shipping, leaving an Extra $100 to cover the remaining costs. I am willing to split the difference and send you and additional $50. Or I will take the full refund and be tempted to leave negative feedback. I don't want to, but this is the action I will take if a resolution is not met by the end of the day 2/20/2009.
This seems fair to me considering the crap he's tried pulling already. Guess we'll know by tomorrow. :D

Oye... This keeps getting better.
Since my last posted we've traded a couple more emails.
His response:
im sorry it wasnt on the listing your right and i apologize for all of this deeply but this never happened to me it was always around that price and if it was a bit more i wouldnt mine paying it, also i didnt not email you before because i could not believe how expensive it was to ship so i was calling all the pakmail's arat ound, and calling shipping companies and it was really expensive, but if you ran those number and there true please send me $100 and i will pack it and ship, and believe me i would not lie to you to steal money, and if thats the impression you got i apologize again.
please check your numbers again and confirm the 163, plus if your ok with sending the 100 dollars to complete 160t, i just want to make this all clear because i didnt get that shipping cost.my response (sent Friday morning so he could get it shipped before the weekend):
I rechecked the numbers on both UPS.com and Fedex.com. They came to approx $160 and $150 respectively. Each carrier also had a staffed drop off location within 10-15 miles of your zipcode. Not knowing your exact address I can't be any more specific than that. I urge you to check both websites for that info and then reccomend you prepay and setup the shipment online before dropping it off.
In my last email I said I would pay $50 of the remaining $100 shipping cost. Do to all the confusion in your listing and the added time this has taken to get completed, I think that is more than fair. I'm not trying screw you over either, but I'm on somewhat of a budget myself.
I'll paypal the remaining $50 after sending this email. If we're finally in agreement, great... send me a tracking number as soon as you have one. If that's a deal breaker, then so be it. Please refund the full $580 I will have sent you by that point.
Anymore questions, please feel free to ask.
Thanks,
His Response (sent at about 10:30 pm Friday night):
thank you for all info and for being great about all this confusion,
as i told you before i need 100 more not 50 because you gave me 60 so thats 100 i still have to pay 40 or 50 more to ship plus tax, PLUS all the bubble rap and materials to send the package which atlest will be 10-15 so thats atleast 60-70 dollars more from my pocket.
so atleast send 25 dollars more and i will put the extra 40 dollars from my pocket, please send this before monday so i can ship this item asap.
i would not even ask for the extra 25 but i dont have them i am bearly getting through this month thats why i sold my cabinet.
thank youThis really irritates the F#$K out of me and I'm through trying to work with him when he's obviously just trying to haggle with me.
So here's the response I'm sending now:
I understand your situation. Please try to understand mine. I bid on an item that had a reserve at $450 and a buy it now of $500 + $60 flat shipping rate. I bid a max bid of $500 on the understanding that in the worst case case scenario I would end up paying a max total of $560 or be outbid. I won the auction and promptly paid the $530 in accordance with ebay, the terms of the listing, and my accepted bid. I have to date paid an additional $50 taking me $20 past what I was willing to pay on the auction in the first place and you still want me to pay $50 more.
You're complaining about extra costs for packing and taxes you will have to pay. What about my extra costs? As I said in my first email, I've been 1000 miles away from home since early Wednesday morning and it's been costing me $14 a day for the last 4 days just to get internet access in my room so we can resolve an issue that could have been dealt with nearly 2 weeks ago. I've made concessions on my part when it was within my every right to go straight to ebay with this. As far as I know, refusing to ship an item and asking for more money after the close of an auction is against ebay's policies. I understand and am willing to work with you to a point, but I'm at the end of my rope. No offense, but it's not my fault you weren't clear enough in the item description as to what your terms for shipping entailed, and it's certainly not my responsibility to pay for more than I agreed to initially.
If your unwilling to except my last set of terms over a matter of $20, then so be it. Refund my money immediately and that will be the end of it. I'm sorry you're in a financial situation that requires you to have to sell such a nice speaker cab, but I didn't bid on your listing as an act of charity so please don't try to lay a guilt trip on me. I don't have the patience for it.
I expect to either have a tracking number in my inbox or a refund in my account by the end of the business day Monday or I will be taking this matter to Ebay's anti-fraud department.
I'd rather pay full price for a new speaker cab than give this SOB another $20, and if he tries to do get another dime out of me, I'm going to let him know! :kick:

heh, no direct response to the last email, but sure enough, I did get a tracking number in my inbox this afternoon. Seems he'd rather be out a little cash vs having to refund the whole amount (which he proabably already spent) and go through another auction and/or deal with ebay/paypal. Now I just got to cross my fingers and hope that he didn't do something malicious to the cabinet. Guess I'll find out later this week.

If the item is damaged you can still report that it his representation was not accurate if he does anything to mess with the cab. He may have gone as cheap as he could with the shipping matts to save money. Which isnt fair to ups/fed ex if its dmg'd in shipping.

UPS will hold the shipper accountable for improper shipping materials.

Shouldn't be much problem with the shipping since the auction DID include a roadcase... One would think this would make shipping pretty simple. Box the speakers up in the roadcase, slap a tracking label on it, and away we go. One of the things that put me over the edge in his last email was his mention of needing to spend more money on bubble wrap and packaging. Unless the case was some kind of soft cover type thing, which sure as hell isn't a "roadcase", I can't imagine what more he would need to do to ship it.
Either way, I've got the pics from his listing and any damage should be very easily identifiable.

hahaha
Should know by tomorrow. Last tracking update showed it as far as St. Paul. Hopefully today's blizzard doesn't slow them down too much.
Just watch the news for something about 300 db power chord laying waste to an entire neighborhood in northeastern South Dakota. :diablotin:

Well it showed up this afternoon! Kinda surprised, it being a Saturday and all, but I guess they were playing catch up from the blizzard on Thursday. The road case is nice and comes with it's own set of castors. Can even hook up the cab with out taking it out of the case. Only tears on the cab are small and on the back edges of the cab so not noticeable. Iplugged it in and played around for a couple of hours. 3 things I noticed.
1.) Loud!! and yes... I love it!! I set it up in my living room, so hopefully that will limit the damage to the neighbors. :diablotin:
2.) Flexibility. With just a little bit of messing around you can really get a lot of different stuff out of this thing. Knew that going in but even more impressive in person. The ease of use is pretty good too. The stompbox is pretty good considering it only has 6 buttons. Haven't hooked my rp 500 into the effects loop yet. waiting for a few other pieces to show up first.
3.) On the Overdrives at the orange and red settings I get quite a bit of feedback when not playing. I'd read about this in several spots online and it seems that the best solution is a good noisegate. Since I really like it heavy and about every thing I read about the feedback issue reccomends the same thing, I've got an ISP decimator pro rack g coming. Also got a furman power conditioner coming. I'm going to build myself a small rack to go with this setup. Other than adding guitars down the road, I shouldn't have to change this setup for quite awhile. Now I just need to get a helluva lot better and start gigging once or twice a month. ;)
And of course, I would be remiss not to show my fellow guildies a pic of my new rig. =D

Awesome. That amp can do it all and its hard to make it sound bad. Gratz.
