My eldest daughter is wanting a Basic Digital Slr for Christmas.
What experience does anyone have with the basic models?
I have been Looking at the Cannon XS 10.1 mpx and the XSi 12.2 mpx.
The reviews on the are good from the sites I checked and the avg price range is
$530 for the XS and $620 for the XSI - thats the Body and 1 Lens.

Looked at Wal-Mart to see what we had local...the XSi is only $50 more and for the higher quality, seems like the better deal.

My two points of advice:
1. Have her start shooting in M, AP and SP modes quickly. You won't learn much more than composition when shooting in one of the auto modes (auto and P and any mode that has a picture on it).
B. Get a used 50mm f1.8 lens for about $70. You can do some really neat stuff with this inexpensive lens when shooting in wide apertures (f1.8, f2, etc).
Three, Have her experiment a LOT. get close to something and zoom in, zoom out, change the aperture, get far from something and do the same things.

I have a bunch of my old 35MM lens... I think they are a K mount. But not 100% on that...will older lenses work on the newer SLR's if they are the same mount type?

Actually it was 1, B, Three. That's like the only funny thing I ever type.
Barb, I've never even heard of a K mount. The newer ones are typically EF or EF-S lenses If it's a concern, bring them to the store and see.
How serious is she going to be with this? The kit lens isn't a great lens by any stretch and if she is either good now, or wants to be really good, it may be better to buy a body and a better lens. This one is a starter, walkaround lens. But if she's starting out and you don't know how far she'll take this, then go with it so you're not out much money.

She likes photography a lot and has had pieces that did well in shows. How far she wants go with it I have no idea... so for now I may just get the kit with the base lens as it will be far better than what she has with a $100 Wal Mart Special.
K and J mount are both older mounts for 35mm camers...there is a third one but it was not as popular. All of my 35MM SLRs are K or J Mount....and you call yourself a photographer...lol

Looks like K was from Pentax or some other brand. I've always used Canons and they were FD mounts way back when and then later changed to EF and EF-S (EF-S is made for a cropped sensor camera like the Rebel or X0D series).
Definitely look into the 50mm/f1.8 lens I recomended earlier. The much wider aperture will allow her to get MUCH more creative. The wider aperture gives a very shallow depth of focus so you can focus in one one thing and have something one inch behind be totally blurry. Cool stuff.

Which Rebel did you get her?
The Xs just dropped to $499 on Walmarts website.
I like the Xsi with the 12.2 mp but may go witht the Xs since it cheaper and its already a huge upgrade from what she has.

Do you mean a Canon 5D? If so, awesome camera. I own a 5D Mark II and it's incredible. She'll love it.
