View Full Version : How do you like your iPhone?

I'm considering switching to ATT and I think the best options for a phone are either the iPhone or the LG Vu. A guy in Radio Shack told me the iPhone is great but isn't good as far as just a phone. Is he wrong?
Would I be able to connect to my outlook exchange server with no additional eqiupment or fees? It's able to do regular web browsing, right?

The G1 was created as direct competition to the iPhone. If I was an ATT customer, I'd have an iPhone. The phone works fine, the email connectivity is simple. The web browser works fine (I think the G1 is a little better at web browsing because of the keyboard only, but the safari browser I think is superior to the G1).
The appplications available (for free and purchase) are fantastic. The G1 is open source, giving way to more readily available and customizable apps, but that doesn't matter to me because I can't do that crap anyway.
So go for the iPhone. It's dah bomb

I have to disagree here. I have ATT and had an iPhone. Got rid off it quickly. I had nothing but problems with it. Lockups, hidden fees, you also HAVE to pay the extra $35 or so a month for Media net. There is no sim card. Downloads are horrid, and slow. After many customer service calls, which ATT is great with customers, I ended up returning it. Talked to some friends and co-workers and all have the same issues but thought it was just a connection issue, though ATT told me different. The salesmen also get a bonus incetive from Apple and ATT for number of sales of the iPhone, so he is deffintely going to push it, believe me buddy works at ATT store.
I would reccomend the ATT Quickfire or the VU. My wife has the Quickfire and this thing is just plain sweet. It is a slider, keyboard, touchscreen LCD phone with all the goodies. It's hard to get a hold of these though due to the high quality of this phone. Holds charge forever and the pics it takes are VERY nice. The screen is very high quality and videos are very clean. Has MiniSD Card read too, as most phones now-a-days do.
I traded my iPhone for a BlackJackII, love it, but you sound more like you should go with the Quickfire or Vu.
Plus the iPhone adds the same "hidden" programs to your computer as the iPod and is NOT compatible with 3rd person players and such, it may work but it causes the phone to run crappy away from the computer.

Contrary to Landro's experience, my own recent switch to AT&T and the iPhone has been a pleasurable one. I haven't experienced any slowness, so my suspicion is that such a criticism is largely based on ones geographic location. Certainly when I'm in an area with less bars, or only Edge (no 3G) coverage, anything 'net related is significantly slower. But is that not to be expected? I've had a few lockups, but a quick reboot usually clears things up.. and to be fair, I haven't always rebooted after loading or updating an app, as is widely suggested. Nor have I encountered any hidden fees, and I'm on my second bill. Yes, you must pay the $30 monthly data fee for any iPhone. But that was clearly explained up-front.
As to how iPhone handles MS Exchange, I cannot comment. But a quick search of the app store revealed quite a few offerings, both free and paid (you pay the author's one time fee to download an app IF you want it... not a recurring charge).
As for ordinary phone use, I have nothing to complain about - save for one minor caveat. When you are doing CERTAIN things (such as typing Facebook comments) and answer a call or otherwise tab out of said app - it won't save your progress. Can be irksome but hardly a dealbreaker IMHO.
Overall, I am satisfied.

Normally yes, but I never have less then full bars/service. For what you will pay the Quickfire is the better all around smartphone.

While I'm sure that's a decent messaging phone, he needs something more sophisticated. The ability to handle Exchange is paramount. I could be wrong, but the Quickfire reviews I read say nothing about such a feature.

the iTouch we have here at the house connected to WiFi handles Exchange servers just fine. This includes free wifi areas around town (bookstores, etc...)
I don't see why the iPhone would be any different.
You have to pay a media package with the G1 - it's nothing secret. You can get media packages on the Vu and quickfire, but you'll pay for them just the same. Waple doesn't strike me as needing to text alot but needing all the applications available and useful for a palm-sized computer with cell capabilities, which is where we're at, really.
The iPod and iPhone interface with the PC isn't as big a PITA as they used to be, just set your stuff to manual sync and it becomes almost a non-issue. Quicktime isn't (or wasn't for me) auto-installed and hijacking all my file associations.
I think there's just some user error going on with some folks

Waple, I am a long time Blackberry user who cannot live without access to Microsoft exchange.
I am also someone who had a horrible experience in the past with ATT (2 years back).
I switched from Blackberry and purchased the Iphone when they came out with the current 3g model last summer. I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this device. I will honestly say it is the single piece of technology that I cannot live without anymore.
The first 2 months I had some dropped calls which was extremely aggravating (however my love for the device kept me happy still). After a few months, ATT made some changes to their network and I honestly cannot think of a single dropped call or issue with their network.
There are alot of smart phones that have alot of "bling" on the market. To me I love the Iphone because everything it does...it does well and keeps things simple. Ive tested the other phones, and while they can claim they have the same type of features...they just dont do them as well. None can even come close to being the media device the iphone is (thank thier years of experience with ipod and itunes).
The setup of the exchange functionality is super easy and it works very well. Emails are "pushed" to your device within seconds of receiving it, emails, calendars and contacts are all sync'ed in real time.
My favorite things about this device are
Reading emails, attachments, pictures-much better IMO than my blackberry's Ive owned (and tested).
A full blown web browser that truly renders web sites and feels like a real web browsing experience (with the exception of flash atm)
A full blown Ipod, I no longer carry around my mp3 player and a phone
A full blown music store wherever i go. I purchase entire albums whereever I am at and start listening
Tons of "apps". I have more functionality than I have time for. However these lil apps make my life easier. Takes 2 seconds to check account balances, check the weather, up my ebay bid, remote control my servers, check my grocery list, look for local restaurants, check recipes
Taking my photo's with me to show off friends and family. The presentation of photo's to people is done extremely well.
My least fav
-typing on a touch screen device. IMO its worth the sacrifice to have a bigger screen and a slim device. Plus, I am rarely typing a novel on the device, so its a nuisance, not a headache.
I wont be giving up my Iphone anytime soon. Love love love it.

I will also add that you are going to pay for data service on any phone that you want exchange type connectivity. So Landro's point is mute.
Most people who rely on exchange services for their blackberry are already used to such fee's. However since its something you rely on and helps business productivity, its a must have.
For the person however that is just checking home email, it may be overkill.

AT&T charges a ~$30 fee for their "PDA package" which is unlimited data. That applies to any PDA device and I have it on my Fuze, which is a WinMo device.
iPhone's do have SIM cards, all GSM phones do (that's part of the point). You can even watch a demonstration (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9738138-1.html) on how to access the SIM card.
The Quickfire has a 1.3 megapixel camera, which is the same quality I had on a phone I got about four years ago. My current phone has a 3 megapixel camera that actually has focasable optics and I'd probably consider that on the lower end these days and moving forward. Stupid European cameras practically start out at 5 megapixels. *grumble* I would consider the 240x320 screen resolution to be low by today's standards. It only does POP3 email. It has a microSD slot, not miniSD, that would be highly unusual. Only 29MB of internal memory... pretty weak.
All I can say is that the people I know who have an iPhone seem to like it a lot. Personally, I'll stick with WinMo devices or, maybe something like the Palm Pre (http://gizmodo.com/5126702/palm-pre-preview-simply-amazing) whenever that eventually comes out (and is available on AT&T).

I adore my iPhone. Considering all the use (phone, music, videos, photos, maps, games, internet, weather, mail) and abuse (200 miles a month in a sweaty running pouch, or constantly crammed in pant/short pockets, or being used as a portable gaming device by my kidlet) I put it through, it's a fantastic piece of hardware. Flawless through my car's Bluetooth, I literally use it while on the run with a cord attachment my wife picked up for me (/tap Picard here!), no battery or charge issues in over 14 months of solid usage... awesomeness.
Unless you're confounded by iTunes, can't touch-screen type with your fingertips, fear accessing wireless networks, or absolutely need pictures imbedded and retrieved directly in text messages, the iPhone rocks.

I ended up getting an iPhone the other day and I do love it. I love almost everything about it. Now granted it's my first real thing like this. I went from a crap phone only device to this so I may be in love with the fact that I can now do all the things I've wnated to do. But I'm really enjoying it so far. Thakns for all the input.
