my pally is going to be 80 soon, i am going to start making gear from blacksmithing, but it depends on what spec the guild needs... so what are we short on? DPS/tank/heals?

I am not to the raid level yet, but from what I gather the big stopper is quality dps, in particular on patchwork. Should you pick a dps spec just for a single boss, I dunno? I do know we have several tanks, and at least one great main tank speccing for dps just to give others room, correct?
I figure if dps is low on patchwork, higher dps throughout the whole raid could improve the evenings raid. I'm clueless about pallies, but so far after 3 weeks watching talk about Naxx, its been a matter of dps, aside from the usual problems of heal timing and dancing to the encounter tricks which won't ever change.
In short, it seems we lack dps more than anything else. That could just be the gear check of patchwork. He is meant to stop people without certain levels of gear. My memory sucks, if patchwork is the wrong name, you know the boss I mean:)

Really comes down to which makes you happier. We have a few tanks, a few healers and a lot of dps. As for quality and work put in on them, that's another story... If you make a tank and put a lot of work into it, there's a good chance one of the others that have made a presence will step aside so you can tank or they can try out a dps spec. if you go DPS, on a 10 man raid, there's 6 spots available, just hav eto get in on it. As a healer, we have a lot of raid healers in the works or ready to go... taking your chances.

DPS is always a useful thing, but you're also competing with several classes, more than compete for the healing and tanking slots. The nice thing about a pally is that there's raid utility to go with that dps, but the bad thing is that you have to be up close and personal with the boss which makes for potentially increased healing liability, offset some by your lack of squishiness.
Then there's the question of raid boss dps vs. instance dps which are two different animals.
Tanks are always in need for instances, but I'm not familiar with how pallys stack up as raid tanks now.
One thing to consider that we've never had in this guild (to my knowledge) is a healing pally. I can't say if it's still the norm, but the progression guilds of the Burning Crusade era used them very heavily (over other healers) on boss fights to keep the tank up because of their mana efficiency and single-target healing effectiveness, but they lack the party heals that other healers have.
In instances where we have scripted events like in the Obsidian Sanctum where the tank stays and we all go slam down adds, it might be useful to have a focused single-target healer and let the party/AE healers work the squishier elements.
Just theorizing here.

ok so i guess its a tossup right now. i may go healing spec, since my old pally, pre BC, healed 40 man raids... i guess i kinda miss it. you are right about the lack of party healing, or AOE healing or whatever, but just recently i came across a nice glyph... 10% of my heals hit up to 5 other players... thats not bad!
i duno, just tryin to figure out which way i wana go... toward epics for dps/tanks / or heals. guess il hold off...

IMO, we have a lot of healers on the way up. Maybe some of them would be happy to change spec or run alts, I don't know.
We also have a decent number of tanks in the works. Don't know how series they are (most are alts, i think)
DPS over approaching 2000 will always be in demand, since there are so many slots to fill.
Holy pallies have gotten better at party healing (check out Beacon of Light - would be a Saviour for Patchwork) but for reliable group wide heals, i think priests or shammies reign right now (although next patch nerfs circle of healing).
Seriously, play what makes you happy. As we start getting the numbers for a second raid group (or running 25-mans) we seriously do need more of everything.

That's pretty much the way to go. You'll never play as well with a character you were sent to because of needs.
And honestly, you'll probably cover all the classes you're interested in anyway since I think the best thing to keep this game fresh is keep your class variety going.
That said, I have noticed a dearth of raiding Warlocks. We used to have a ton, but I see articles and posts of people saying they're out of favor. No idea if this is true, but it was always one of the cooler classes, IMO. Certainly a snap to level.
Hmm. Maybe my JC-er will be a 'lock ...
