I'm not a big overclocker but I just bought some new components, one of which includes a new i7 920 from Intel.
If you are interested in overclocking a i7 920 I would recommend getting the March issue of CPU Computer Power User. They use bios settings on the motherboard for all the overclocking. No mods were made to the cooling system either.
They pushed the 920 to 3.8GHz with a BCLK frequency of 190MHz and memory frequency to 1,140MHz which gave it better overall scores through the tests than a i7 965 Extreme. One test was the Futuremark 3DMark06 for CPU Benchmark where the 920 scored 6187 and the 965 scored 5562.
What does this mean? A significant cost savings with better performance.
Intel i7 965 Extreme $999 (newegg)
Intel i7 920 $279 (newegg)
Cost of the magazine $5.99 USD
When I get my new computer components I am going to be overclocking the cpu for sure.
