Default Cap'n Morri's Story - PotBS

PotBS is Pirates of the Burning Sea, a short lived MMO. They had a writing contest for beat keys, 5 winners were chosen, this is what I wrote that won me the beta key.

Cap’n Morri’s Story – Pirates of the Burning Sea
By Morrigan

So how’d a girl like me come ta be a pirate ya ask? Well it’s best ta start at the beginnin’. Me given name is Morrigan, Morri is what they call me though. I come from a port town on a large isle, born thirty-one years ago and a ray o‘ sunshine ta a poor family…even if they didn’t recognize it. Ma was like every other wharf rats’ mother doing laundry and mendin’, and Pa got an odd job off loadin’ the ships every now and then, most oft paid in drink which was just fine by him but didn’t feed us none. That don’t make him bad though, he treated us nice enough.

Oh, I hated that town. Wanted ta leave it ever since I could walk. See there’s not much ta do when you’re not a high born girl. I could sit and mend and wash with me mother, but I’d sooner slice me own finger off. ‘Sides I was always better with a knife than I was with a needle. So I’d steal off in the mornings ‘fore she could catch me and go play with the boys pitchin’ rocks and such. It was good for awhile, then we started ta grow as children do and things started changin’. Next thing I knew I was hittin’ ‘em for real and not for play. That gave me good beginnin’s on how ta handle meself…oi just because I’m talkin’ doesn’t mean ya can stop pourin’!

Now where was I?

Good beginnings…well come about the age o’ fourteen me ma and pa decided that I’d et enough o’ their food and were going ta marry me o’f ta some man who was poor but had more money than us. I wasn’t about ta have no shackles on me. I had dreams. I saw those big ships sailin’ in and out an’ caught some o’ the stories about far off places from the sailors. So it was at fourteen I decided it was time ta live me dreams, got on with a flute, and shoved off.

The “Emerald Queen” she was named, just a merchants ship nothin’ in particular special about it except me own sentiment. I started doing all the little odd jobs on the ship no one else wants ta do, swabbing the deck, countin’ food stores…don’t look so surprised - o’ course I can count, I said I was born poor not stupid…stop interruptin’ me. The crew was good, never treated me no different because I was a girl, and worked me just as hard as the men.

I sailed on the “Green Queen” as we called her for nigh on 7 years ‘til we were run up on by some pirates. As luck would have they were more for the pillagin’ than the rapin’ thankfully. I was able ta take on with ‘em, but there needed ta be some changes in ta the daily duties they assigned me. I wasn’t about ta go back ta some menial tasks after spendin’ years workin’ me way up. The Cap’n and meself conversed about it, some might call it a little scuffle but in the end I got me rightful place on the “Sea Nymph”.

Now months at sea can get ta person, and the new crew I took on with wasn’t like the old. And just because I didn’t have any problems with me old crew bein’ handsy doesn’t mean the men in the ports were the same, and there are more undesirable ports then there be desirable ones. So a few o’ the Nymph’s crew took ta taunting me with an old but familiar taunt o’ how I need ta be in silks ta be hiked up and not woolies ta be pulled down. I always tell ‘em “I always have silk on me ta be hiked up.” Then I hike me dagger “Silk” up across their throats. I call it silk not just for the taunts but more because it slides like silk through skin as it opens up a throat.

Ya can’t be doin’ that ta your own crew or you’re liable ta be takin’ a short, wet walk. So when someone would start gropin’ around I’d slip me “Silk” out and slice of the tip o’ their finger. They get the message and they can still do their work on the ship. It’s been a long while since anyone has been brave enough ta grab me on the Nymph.

That brings us ta now, 1720.

I’m about ta be the Cap’n o’ me own ship ya know? Got me eye on a nice ketch. Maybe I’ll call her “Maiden’s Virtue”. Yeah that makes me laugh too. I’m only gonna tell ya this because I like ya, if you ever get tired o’ sloppin’ swill in glasses and want some real adventure ask around for Cap’n Morri and you’ll find me soon enough.
